Listening Blog; week 10

For this week, I have chosen to listen to "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I have heard this song many times before and it is definitely one of my favorites. The upbeat tempo and lyrics are very happy. I did not know that this was a response to the southern songs being targeted. Especially when he says "I hope Neil Young will remember". I had no idea that they were taking a jab at another artist. I was stationed in the South for three years and I was very close to Alabama. I have been to mussel shoals and Birmingham and the only reason I ever went was because of this song. I think that this band produced a ton of classic hits but also they were very motivated by their culture and where they came from. I found that most southerners are very proud of where they came from and i think alot of that stems from the music and the deep roots of music that is there. I think that Lynyrd Skynyrd was a very politcally motivated group, but their music was very easy to listen to and has a nice tune. Gimme three steps is another great song by the band that reflects a good vibe and good tempo for the listener. Overall I really enjoy this song and was pleased to learn the background of the lyrics and why they said what they said. I think that with music, it is easy to throw in political views while still sounding good.

  1. I've never actually liked this song, just because it was too country-ish for my taste and it felt so overplayed. I like how southerners are proud of their place though and that you could relate to it and I thought the meaning of the lyrics was interesting and cool as well.
